AI stylist and personal shopping platform Alta just closed an $11 million seed round led by Menlo Ventures, signaling growing investor appetite for AI-powered consumer experiences in fashion.
Founded by tech veteran Jenny Wang, 28, Alta offers an AI-driven personal stylist that recommends outfits based on users’ budgets, lifestyles, weather, and calendar. The platform also enables users to upload their existing wardrobe — either by taking photos, forwarding purchase receipts, or searching Alta’s extensive database — and virtually try on new clothing combinations using personalized avatars.
“The technology finally caught up with the vision,” Wang told TechCrunch, explaining that earlier attempts to build such a product fell short due to limitations in AI. Inspired by the iconic wardrobe scene from Clueless, Alta aims to make styling and shopping smarter and more accessible.
Industry Backing and Star-Studded Support
Alta’s impressive seed round drew support from notable names across tech, fashion, and venture capital. In addition to Menlo Ventures, investors include Benchstrength; Algaé Ventures (backed by LVMH’s Arnault family); Phenomenal Ventures (founded by Meena Harris); and Anthropic’s Anthology Fund. High-profile angels — such as DoorDash CEO Tony Xu, models Jasmine Tookes and Karlie Kloss, Rent the Runway co-founder Jenny Fleiss, and Poshmark CEO Manish Chandra — also participated.
Notably, Michelle Obama’s stylist Meredith Koop contributed to training Alta’s AI, ensuring its recommendations meet real-world fashion standards.
Expanding Partnerships and Global Ambitions
Alta has already partnered with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and is eyeing expansion across Europe with the help of LVMH connections and tech influencer Zita d’Hautville. Additionally, lifestyle icon Marie Kondo is assisting Alta’s entry into Oceania and Pacific markets.
Relocating from San Francisco to New York to lead Alta’s growth, Wang highlighted NYC’s vibrant AI startup scene: “Many of the most exciting consumer AI companies are being started in NYC,” she noted.
The Road Ahead for Alta
Fresh funding will drive team growth and ongoing R&D efforts, with Wang still hands-on coding and iterating on the product based on user feedback. Partnerships with retailers worldwide are next on the roadmap as Alta seeks to scale its reach and refine the experience.
