Google Launches AI Mode for Search in India — Gemini-Powered Q&A Tool Now Live

Google has officially introduced its AI-powered search experience—dubbed “AI Mode”—to users in India today. Available through the experimental Search Labs platform, the new Q&A-style interface allows users to opt in and interact with Google in more natural, conversational ways.

This launch marks a significant expansion beyond the U.S., where the feature was initially tested with premium users and later rolled out to the broader public after Google I/O 2024.

AI Mode Supports Complex Queries in English

Once Indian users opt into AI Mode via Search Labs, they can begin asking multi-part or nuanced questions in English. An example given by Google highlights the tool’s ability to handle complex prompts like:
“My kids are 4 and 7 and have lots of energy. Suggest creative ways to get them active indoors without expensive toys.”

Users can also refine responses by asking follow-up questions, mimicking the back-and-forth interaction of chat-based AI platforms.

Voice and Image Search Supported in India

Given India’s diverse internet user base and strong adoption of voice search, Google has launched AI Mode in the country with both voice and image input support. The company emphasized that the feature is powered by a custom version of Gemini 2.5, its latest multimodal AI model.

Google noted that early users of AI Mode tend to submit longer, more conversational queries—2 to 3 times longer than traditional search inputs.

India: A Strategic Market for AI Search

With over 870 million internet users, India is one of Google’s largest and most vital markets. It serves as a real-world testing environment, especially for multilingual and mobile-first audiences. While the current AI Mode supports only English, Google has not disclosed timelines for regional language integration.

This move comes as Google faces rising competition from AI-driven search tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity. The company is also ramping up related features like AI Overviews, which summarize web results, reportedly used by 1.5 billion people globally.
