Midjourney V1 AI Video Model Goes Live—How It Stacks Up Against Sora & Runway Gen 4

Midjourney, one of the leading AI image generation startups, has officially entered the AI video generation market with the launch of its much-anticipated V1 model. Announced on Wednesday, V1 allows users to upload an image—or use one generated by Midjourney’s other models—and transform it into four distinct five-second video clips.

Like Midjourney’s popular image models, V1 is accessible exclusively through Discord and is currently only available on the web. The release of V1 places Midjourney in direct competition with other advanced AI video models, including OpenAI’s Sora, Runway’s Gen-4, Adobe’s Firefly, and Google’s Veo 3.

While many AI companies are targeting the commercial market with tools for ad creatives and B-roll generation, Midjourney is pursuing a more ambitious vision. In a company blog post, CEO David Holz stated that V1 is the first step toward developing “real-time open-world simulations.” The company also plans to expand into AI-generated 3D renderings and real-time models in the near future.

The launch of V1 comes just a week after Midjourney was hit with a lawsuit from entertainment giants Disney and Universal. The suit claims that Midjourney’s AI-generated images include unauthorized depictions of copyrighted characters such as Darth Vader and Homer Simpson. Hollywood studios have expressed growing concern that AI-generated content could devalue or replace human creativity, especially as these models are often trained on copyrighted material.

Despite these legal headwinds, Midjourney continues to position itself as a creativity-first platform rather than a commercial content tool. However, the company is charging a premium for its video generation capabilities. A single video generation will cost users eight times more than an image generation, meaning subscription credits will be used up far more quickly.

V1 is currently available through Midjourney’s $10-per-month Basic plan, but users on higher tiers—including the $60/month Pro plan and the $120/month Mega plan—will enjoy unlimited video creation in the platform’s slower “Relax” mode. The company also plans to review its video pricing model in the coming month.

V1 offers several customization features. Users can opt for automatic animation, which applies randomized movement to an image, or manually input specific animation instructions via text. Settings also allow users to control motion levels, toggling between “low motion” and “high motion.” While each video starts at five seconds, users can extend them in four-second increments, for a maximum length of 21 seconds.

True to Midjourney’s signature aesthetic, early V1 videos exhibit a surreal, dreamlike quality rather than hyperrealistic visuals. Initial user feedback has been positive, although it remains to be seen how V1 will stack up against more mature AI video models that have been on the market for months or years.

With V1, Midjourney is not only broadening its creative toolkit but also signaling its long-term ambition to redefine digital content creation through AI-powered simulation.
