OpenAI Makes ChatGPT Go Free for One Year in India

  • OpenAI is offering a free one-year ChatGPT Go plan for Indian users starting November 4.
  • India is OpenAI’s second-largest market, but monetization remains challenging.
  • The move comes ahead of OpenAI’s DevDay Bengaluru event and rising AI competition.

OpenAI is giving Indian users a major incentive to join ChatGPT Go — a free one-year subscription starting November 4. The move marks the company’s latest effort to strengthen its footprint in one of its fastest-growing and most strategic markets.

A Limited-Time Offer for India’s Growing AI Audience

OpenAI announced that users in India who sign up for ChatGPT Go during the promotional period will receive a free 12-month subscription. Existing ChatGPT Go users will also benefit from the offer. Although OpenAI has not revealed when the promotion ends, the campaign signals a strong push to expand adoption in India, a nation with more than a billion internet users and 700 million smartphones.

Launched in August at under $5 per month, ChatGPT Go was designed as OpenAI’s most affordable plan, offering 10 times more usage than the free version. It also includes access to file uploads, image creation, and improved memory for more personalized responses.

India: A Key Growth Market for OpenAI

India has quickly become OpenAI’s second-largest market after the U.S. The company opened its New Delhi office in August and has been building a local team to deepen its presence. Despite strong user interest — over 29 million app downloads in the 90 days leading up to August — monetization has been a challenge. The app generated just $3.6 million in in-app purchases during that time.

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s vice president and head of ChatGPT, said the creativity and adoption from Indian users have been “inspiring,” adding that the company looks forward to seeing how users continue to build and learn with these tools.

Competitive Pressure and Local Engagement

OpenAI’s promotion comes amid growing competition from Perplexity and Google, both offering similar free AI subscription deals in India. OpenAI is also preparing for its upcoming DevDay Exchange in Bengaluru on November 4, where it plans to make India-specific announcements for developers and businesses.

With its free year of ChatGPT Go, OpenAI aims to deepen engagement in one of the most dynamic AI markets worldwide — a move that could shape the company’s long-term strategy in Asia.
