Spotify Code Hints at Lossless Audio Tier

It’s been over four years since Spotify first announced its plans to launch a lossless audio tier, and users are still waiting. Despite frequent leaks and cryptic remarks from executives, the much-anticipated high-quality streaming option has yet to materialize.

Now, new findings suggest Spotify may finally be preparing to roll it out.

Fresh Clues in Spotify’s App Code

Technologist and reverse engineer Chris Messina recently uncovered references to “lossless” in the latest build of Spotify’s desktop app. The code snippets — help cards meant to inform users about the new service — describe features like “Lossless music, now in premium” and “the best sound quality on Spotify for music in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz.”

Other lines warn users about possible limitations, noting that some tracks may not be available in lossless or that poor device connectivity could impact playback. One snippet recommends enjoying the service on Spotify Connect-compatible devices or wired hardware for the best experience.

Similar clues have emerged in Spotify’s mobile app. A Reddit user, u/bendotlc, pointed out new code strings referencing “high-fidelity music in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz.” According to their findings — later confirmed by Appsensa — the feature is already present in the app but disabled.

No Official Confirmation — Yet

Despite mounting evidence, Spotify has remained tight-lipped about a release timeline. During the Q1 2025 earnings call, Chief Business Officer Alex Norstrom reiterated that Spotify continues to invest in “higher tiers” but declined to provide specifics.

“So creating higher tiers around new offerings is something we are working towards as it really opens up new opportunities to delight users,” Norstrom said.

Previously branded Spotify HiFi, the lossless service was first announced in 2021. Spotify initially blamed licensing issues for delays — an obstacle that may now be clearing. In early 2025, the company struck new deals with major labels including Warner Music and Universal Music Group, which could pave the way for the long-awaited launch.

A Premium Tier on the Horizon?

According to a Bloomberg report, Spotify plans to launch a new Music Pro premium tier later this year, bundling high-quality audio with remixing tools and other advanced features. Spotify declined to comment on the report.

While code references alone aren’t a guarantee, recent developments suggest the lossless tier is still alive — and perhaps finally on track. Until Spotify offers official word, though, cautious optimism remains the best approach for eager audiophiles.
